
Happy Camp Community Coalition
The Coalition discussed and agreed on a Goal, a Mission Statement, and elected a Board of Directors. The Board then met briefly and discussed how to proceed. The Board will meet monthly; the Coalition will meet quarterly.
The GOAL is: That children and youth be alcohol and other drug free and have the skills, tools and opportunity to make healthy life choices.
The MISSION is: To serve the Happy Camp Community and surrounding areas by utilization of all available resources for Evidence-based prevention of substance abuse Evidence-based interventions and/or treatments that result in children who are alcohol and other drug free and who have the skills, tools and opportunity to make healthy life choices.
The BOARD is composed of:
- Steve Burns MD - Pres. (Medical Director, Karuk Tribe of California)
- Dr. Mike Sherrod - VP (Principal, HC High School)
- Karen Derry - Secy/Treas (Coordinator, Family Resource Center)
- Brian Boyd - Law enforcement Representative (CA Dept. of Fish and Game)
- Doreen Mitchell - Parent Representative
- Joy Muhleck - Principal, HC Elementary School
- Pat Eisenberg RN - School Nurse
- Marcia Armstrong - Alternate Board Member (Siskiyou County Supervisor)
- Two Student Representatives, yet to be selected.
The general plan for proceeding is as follows:
1. Gather as much BASELINE INFORMATION on key indicators as possible. Being the isolated community we are, it is hoped we can gather pretty comprehensive data on key indicators such as: Any of you who can contribute data for this please help out).
- Demographics
- Employment
- Substance use
- Crime figures
- Teen pregnancy
- School parameters
- Child Protective Service utilization
- Inventory of available youth activities & Services
2. Develop a NEEDS ASSESSMENT specific to our community.
3. Determine which evidence-based PROGRAMS have been shown to be successful in addressing the identified needs.
4. Develop FUNDING for those programs
5. IMPLEMENT the programs
6. MONITOR EFFECTIVENESS of program elements:
- Pre and Post surveys of participants in activities
- Document changes in key indicators over time.
7. Keep REPEATing the process over multiple years.
We desire to implement a COMPREHENSIVE MULTIYEAR STRATEGY designed to:
INCREASE YOUTH PROTECTIVE FACTORS
- Provide a sense of belonging to school and community
- Increase social & communication skills
- Strengthen family bonds
- Asset Development
- Promote spiritual growth
DECREASE RISK FACTORS FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE
- Promote academic success
- Develop job skills
- Promote positive attitudes
- Improve family functioning
- Provide healthy alternative activities
