Veteran’s Appreciation Day: Siskiyou County will be honoring its veteran’s from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 at the fairgrounds in Yreka. The event is open to the public and includes displays, resource booths, music and food. An appreciation ceremony to honor our veterans’ service to our country will be held from 12 -1.p.m. Transportation for vets to the event is available. For more information contact Siskiyou County Veterans Services Officer Tim Grenvik at 842-8010. 

Health Interest Survey: The Siskiyou County Rural Health Institute of the College of the Siskiyous is in the process of surveying our communities to determine local needs for health care information and training. This will be used to help develop course offerings for the new facility and health program on the Yreka campus. Learning Coaches for the Library Literacy program: The College of the Siskiyous is offering a course on becoming a “learning coach” to be delivered via distance learning video facilities at High Schools around the county. Course dates are June 11, 18 and 25 from 1-4 p.m. The “Education 60 – Reading Principles” course is helpful for teachers, instructional aides, tutors and those wanting to provide reading and writing assistance to others. This is a .5 unit course and costs $23, although there are certain waivers available. Contact Mary Jane Bolton at 841-5916. 

Yreka Senior Nutrition: The City of Yreka will be discontinuing its Senior program on June 30. As of July 1, Madrone Hospice will assume management of the program. They will expand the program to offer five meals a week at the Senior site and will expand home delivery to three miles beyond the city limits. Daily bus service from Weed and Montague  to Yreka will be offered by Madrone to bring Seniors in from outlying areas for shopping, appointments and a congregate meal. Also, a resource directory for Senior services will soon be available for download from the Madrone website  http://www.madronehospice.org

Senior Surveys: The various Family/Community Resource Centers have been holding a special Senior luncheon to survey attendees on their needs and wants. Results of each community’s survey will be presented at a follow-up luncheon with a discussion of how to fill gaps in needs. 

Senior Fair: The annual Senior Fair will be held on May 13 from 9a.m -1p.m at the Yreka Community Center. This event includes lots of booths and resources for Seniors.

Family Care of Older Adults: Passages Caregiver Resource Center will offer a free training entitled “The Family Guide To Long Term Care.” The class will be offered Monday May 11 and May 18 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Mt Shasta Community Resource Center Annex.
