Our
'Travel Tales' . . .
October 4, 2009 . . .
We
decided we needed a little holiday from all the work at the little
Cottage
in Etna so left last Wednesday for a respite in Eureka, Nevada
to visit friends and stay at the RV park still run by our 95 year-young
friend, Scotty.
We
came through Reno rather than Cedarville and Gerlach, so were able
to make it to Cold Springs, Nevada (half way between Fallon and
Austin) just after dark (since we didn't get away from errands in
Yreka until 11:00 a.m.) . . . and 'Boy Howdy' was it cold that night!
Must have been about 20 degrees. I was sure glad I put in extra
blankets!
Two
years ago we had a shock as we drove up to this favorite little
spot (the site of an original Pony Express stop) to have a piece
of home-baked pie . . . only to find that a few weeks before the
whole restaurant had burned to the ground. All that was left were
the two gas pumps outside! They are now in the process of rebuilding
and by our trip back here next year, it will be open for business
again. Thankfully, the little RV park and his whole array of solar
panels were untouched.
We
stopped at The Trading Post in Austin to visit with our little friend
Alice who is always a hoot. One of the times we came through she
was really sick and we greeted her with a bouquet of bright coloured
flowers and healing hugs to cheer her up. As soon as she saw us
come in the door Thursday morning, she stopped everything and rushed
for a hug and told the tourists in the shop about the flowers we
had brought her on one visit! We left, heading on down Highway 50
with happy hearts.
We
didn't stop at the sweet little overnight spot on the hillside,
Bob Scott Campground, as we were hoping to make it to the Senior
Center in Eureka for lunch.
Our
tradition here has been breakfast at the Pony Espresso Deli and
lunch at the Senior Center where they serve up home-made bread,
rolls and cookies and good food. As a Senior, for $2 you can't beat
the meal and the people always make us feel so welcome. It's as
if we are only gone for a week instead of months or years!
We
arrived at 12:30 to find the place dark, except for two office staff,
who informed us that instead of lunch, they did a breakfast that
morning . . . the reason the aroma of bacon, pancakes and maple
syrup greeted us at the door!
We
were pleased to see that the Pony Espresso Deli had re-opened (after
being closed for over a year), carrying on the tradition of home-baked
bread and cinnamon rolls, great breakfast burritos and sandwiches
by another Mennonite family who moved here from Wickenburg, Arizona.
We miss Paul and Wendy, Rhoda and Louie, but still the same good
food.
After
lunch we stopped in to see Wally and he showed Eb around his Art-collection
Gallery. It's is truly amazing the beautiful art he has collected
in the past 40 years. This piece of 'desert yard art' was one of
Eb's favorites: 'The Bottle Tree'!!!!!!

We
then headed for Scotty's to get hooked up. We found him in great
humor and health and he and Eb have enjoyed catching up on happenings
since it has been two years since our last trip here.

Friday
we slept in and got to the Senior Center for lunch. Eb walked back
up to the Chinook and I walked around town, finding a park bench
where I could hook into Wifi and send a few emails.
The
Eureka Gallery of Deon
and Trish
Reynolds was open in the spot originally housed by our stain-glass
artist friend, Judy, who unfortunately passed away a few years ago.
It was great to see what they have done with the space, displaying
their incredible photography, Trish's beadwork, original works by
Deon's father, and ceramics and paintings by artist friends.
I
found a tea mug that just fit my hands perfectly and a few little
treasures Trish had made. I had quite a wonderful time there talking
with Deon and in the course of our conversation I mentioned our
trip to Hopi-land a few years ago and how we and friends have been
saving feathers from 'visitors' that we then send on to our friend
Elmer there for use in Ceremonies and in his Kachina doll-making.
Before
I left, Deon brought down a shoebox from the shelf and handed it
to me, full of feathers, to send to Elmer . . . I was truly overcome
by his generosity.
If
you ever find yourself traveling Highway 50 through Nevada, be sure
and stop in at our friends' places to shop or eat or just say hello.
Yesterday
was a low-key day and we watched a new release movie, 'Local Color'
about an older artist and young student. It was very insightful,
although I could have done without all the language!
We
planned to have a 'day of rest' on Sunday (today) and it has been
easy to do as we awoke to snow!!!!!!!!! By the time I took these
few photos, it had melted, but off and on there are still a few
flurries.

So
much for our sunny desert holiday! They tell us that it will warm
up this week . . . if not, we'll be back in Etna in time for the
pancake breakfast next Sunday!
P.S.
added Monday, Oct. 5th: Eb came down with a cold yesterday
afternoon and I figured we had better 'get out of Dodge' before
I got it too . . . then we would have no one to drive us home! So
we left Eureka this morning before I could find a wifi spot to post
this.
We
did make a quick stop in at the Senior Center to say goodbye and
fresh home-made cinnamon rolls had just come out of the oven . .
. so they didn't have to twist my arm too much to take a few with
us!
I
drove all day and now we are in Susanville at an RV park with all
the facilities, so I am able to load this onto the site. Will be
home early afternoon tomorrow . . . whoopee!
More
later,
Che'usa
