Some History of Cheeseville,USA

From what we have been told, a W. D. Shelley built the community of Cheeseville around a cheese factory and creamery he started in 1880.
At that time he also printed a Cheeseville Newspaper!

This photo we obtained from the Historical Society
and says it is
"Cheeseville looking north on Callahan-Yreka stage route, 1889,
owned then by W. D. Shelley.
The white building being the cheese factory."

Here is an advertisement that appeared in the Yreka Journal
July 10, 1880 for the opening of the Pioneer Cheese Factory!

This photo is of the original Shelley house.
We have been told that the house was built over a log cabin
(which I guess you were able to see inside the bottom left of house)

Eb Whipple has been the Mayor of Cheeseville since the late 1970's.
No one is sure if he was really elected or just self-appointed! The population of Cheeseville hasn't changed much in that many years. . . still about ten families live along 'Old Cheeseville Road'.

We will continue to research more of the Cheeseville history and add it as it becomes available.
