A
few more things we learned from Pete and his sister Peg's years
of research:
~
Benjamin Franklin Walker, William Sutherland Bailey Walker and
Elizabeth Margaret Head Walker's 4th son (who we knew was Siskiyou
County Sheriff between 1891-1894) bought the old Morton house
on Third Street in Yreka in 1895. Before moving into the home,
B. F. (who liked to be called Frank) had it completely rebuilt
and changed it from a one-and-a-half story house to a two story
house. Frank also bought the drug store of E. Autenrieth &
Company that same year and the next year took in Charles Avery
as partner and the firm became the Walker-Avery Drug Store.
Three
years later Frank sold his interest to Mr. Avery and he and his
family moved to Portland where he became a lumber broker until
his death late in 1911.
His
obituary stated that Frank "had the happy faculty of making
a friend of everyone that he met and retaining the friendship".
~
John Montgomery Walker, William Sutherland Bailey Walker and Elizabeth
Margaret Head Walker's 2nd son also had a son who was in law enforcement.

Herbert
(Bert) Scott Walker was born in 1870 near Fort Jones and was killed
in an attempt to apprehend two criminals in Modoc County in 1901.
One of the criminals was also killed, however, the other was never
apprehended.
It
was with persistence on the part of Pete and his sister Peg that
on May 9, 2008, (over 100 years after Bert's death) that the 32nd
annual California Peace Officers Foundation enrolled Constable
Herbert S. Walker of Modoc County for having laid down his life
in the line of duty. This sacrifice of life happened when he answered
the call for assistance from a fellow peace officer in helping
to apprehend two escaped prisoners and was shot down from concealment
by one of them.
Bert
was one of ten officers honoured last year in a very elaborate
and solemn ceremony held at the California State Capital in Sacramento.
The plaque they presented in honour of Bert will be given to the
Modoc County Sheriff's Department to be preserved and displayed.
This was a huge undertaking for Pete and Peg as part of their
many decades of researching and preserving the Walker Family History.

From
all of us who now benefit from the endless hours and years of
research, letter writing, traveling and documenting photos and
history of the Walker family, we send our heartfelt gratitude
to the dynamic duo of Pete and Peg. Their dedicated work has made
our jobs so much easier.
