Refinishing Teak Gunwales
November, 2003

This is a shot of the gunwales before I started.
They were really dark grey and weathered even more then the photo shows.
I tried using Starbrite Teak Cleaner without much success.
I then tried Starbrite Teak Brightener and that didn't help much either.

The Grain was raised so much that sanding seemed the best solution.
I removed the majority of the hardware and started sanding.
60 Grit first, then 100 Grit, and then down to 150 Grit.

I didn't think it necessary to go any lower then 150 Grit.
Teak is more open grained then a lot of other wood.
I used a Palm Sander and also sanded a lot by hand.

This is the outcome after 5 coats of Starbrite Premium Golden Teak Oil.
It wasn't as much work as I thought it would be and I think it came out great.
So Great, It inspired me to do the rest of the Teak on the Console and even the Swim Platform.
