The entire area of this tour is within the ancestral territories of the Shasta and Karuk Tribes. Tribal people still inhabit this land and play a major role in the social, cultural and economic structure of this wonderful country.

For Your Information:

• Your perspective of the countryside will change at either end of this tour. As you travel this roadway, observe the transformation from the eastern high desert into the western dense mountainous forest.
• The osprey, bald eagle and great blue heron have numerous nesting sites which can be easily viewed along this route.
• The geology of the Klamath Mountains matches the Sierra Nevada's because it is of the same origin.
• The length of the thoroughfare featured in this tourguide is approximately 135 miles.
• Do not drink the water from rivers and streams without first boiling for at least one full minute to be safe.
• Check for current fishing regulations. They change periodically.
• The Pacific Crest Trailhead crosses Highway 96 at Seiad Valley and is about midway between Southern California and Washington State.
• Please do not feed bears or leave food out which attracts them to your campsite. Bears can be dangerous.
• Swim and boat at your own risk. The river and stream currents are extremely dangerous. Always use lifejackets.

Helpful Traveling Tips:

• Beware of sharp rocks on the road which may be caused by occasional slides.
• Watch for changing road conditions especially in spring and winter.
• Be vigilant of animals crossing the road; deer, bears, squirrels, turtles, grouse, raccoons, coyotes, skunks, etc.
• Please be considerate of local drivers who are not sight-seeing by pulling over when they are close behind you.
• Poison oak is abundant and identified by its three-leaf cluster. The leaves' color can vary through shades of green, yellow, red or brown. This plant can cause itching and blisters (photo ID above).
• The prudent traveler begins the river road with a full tank of gas. Fuel can be purchased with credit cards in Seiad Valley, Happy Camp and Orleans.
