Community Recycling

So far in 2004 I have had a great response to the Recycling Program.  In five months, I have received nearly twice as many tons (see “If you like numbers” section of this article) as collected all of last year.   I credit this to public outreach by way of the brochures, fliers, and notices that I have developed, and word of mouth.  I receive the most recyclables from Orleans, second is Somes Bar, third is Forks of the Salmon, and last but not least Happy Camp.

The 2004 Car Crushing Event was a great success again.  We crushed nine semi truck loads of vehicles and miscellaneous metals.  That was a grand total of 156.48 tons, being saved from polluting our ancestral territory. Great job everyone!

Forks of the Salmon will be getting a larger service time, due to the high demand.  The Recycling Program purchased a new smaller trailer to handle the windy road.  This will allow the Recycling Technician to take more recycling from their area.  The regular trailer is too wide to go up the road to Forks. (I’ve been told I’m just chicken by a few of the elders that live up there.) The Karuk Tribe Mechanic Shop is currently working on the rails and mesh of the new trailer.  I hope to start using it by July 26th, my next recycling date for the Forks area.

I shocked a few people in Orleans by having three large 4’x4’x4’ bags of Poly film from the new Elder housing in Orleans next to my driveway.  (Poly Film is used in transport of new trailers to keep the inside clean and dry)  I had placed the Poly film in mesh bags out in front of my house where I usually place my trash on Sunday.  (The bags were too big to load into the trailer by myself so I had to go for reinforcements.)  They thought that was my trash! Talk about laughing hysterically, when they found out that it was only recycling!  Arcata Community Recycling gave us kudos for fast thinking, and saving over 300lbs of Poly film from the trash!

Due to the hectic schedule of June and July I will have the Appliance Removal Event the first few weeks of August. If anyone wants to be placed on the 2005 list for Appliance Removal, Please call me @ 627-3446 Ext. 16. (I will assist Elders the Disabled first, Recyclers second and then everyone else.)

The number of businesses that recycle with us is growing.  We can now boast a total of twenty businesses that either; request pick up or that come to our general public times.  Great Job!!

I have the 2004 Recycling Program Photo Album finished. Anyone wishing to look through it can find it in the lobby of the Department of Natural Resources Building in Orleans.  There are some great photos of the Car Crushing Event, the AAA Battery Round Up, the Recycling Photos, and the Orleans Volunteer Fire Department Training that was during the Car Crushing Event.  Come by and take a look.

I take from 1,900 to 4,083 lbs of recycling to the coast each week.
