When a person hears the term "Classical Guitar" a number of things may come to mind. One might think of a finely crafted acoustical instrument made from the choicest woods or of the soothing and wonderfully textured music of Francisco Tarrega's "Requerdos de la Alhambra". But are the music and the instrument necessarily tied to one another? The legendary classical guitarist-virtuoso, Andres Segovia seemed to believe they are.
Commenting about people referring to him as "the daddy of all guitarists", Mr. Segovia said, "If that's true, groups like the Beatles are only illegitimate children."
Mr. Segovia, an example of the purist point of view, had a certain disdain for electric guitars and Rock and Roll music. Which begs the question: Can other kinds of music be played on the "classical guitar"? Can classical music be played on an electric guitar? The answer is a resounding, "Of course!"
Additionally, the name "classical guitar" describes more than just a type of musical instrument or kind of music. It also, and very importantly, refers to a specific method or technique of playing the instrument- whether it be a Les Paul Standard or a Jose Oribe made from the finest Brazilian rose wood.
I teach the classical guitar method because it is extremely useful and flexible. But that doesn't mean that I only teach classical music. Whether you're playing classical, jazz, blues, rock and roll, country or folk music, the classical guitar method is invaluable.
