ASSUMPTION
OF THE SAINTS

acrylic on canvas
36" x 24"

Reflecting on the apparent dearth of modern religious art, I decided to do a painting of a religious event from the approach of a documentarian. These events have already taken place in our collective psyche. (There I go with the mumbo-jumbo I promised to avoid! -- Don't worry, it's not contagious.) My intent was to make this an apocryphal albeit secular view of a spiritual event. Whew! Think about THAT for a while!!! Please note that, while the title makes reference to saints, no recognizable saints are portrayed here, with the exception of Saint Equis and Saint Simian. It has been suggested by one viewer that Doug Henning appears in the picture, but I flatly deny it. While I will not deny that there is some humorous intent here, I have tried to capture (as well as any non-religious person could) a sense of mystery and wonder at the notion of the Rapture and the bodily assumption of the faithful. Do not dismiss this as sacrilege or ridicule without first studying it. I think you will find that my treatment is respectful and sincere.
