Harmonica Songs
From Papa

Papa could not read music and never had a music lesson. He always liked music and I know in High School he hung around with the band members. Times were poor and his family could not afford any instruments or lessons. When he met his step-father's friend Buck Elmore, he learned to play the harmonica.

The harmonia was small, cheap and could be carried anywhere he went. Papa had a gift to hear the music and was able to make the harmonia do just what he wanted it to do. All he did was listen to songs he liked and before long he could play the whole song. This little bit of music gave him great pleasure. You could tell what kind of mood he was in by what songs he played. Sometimes they were, waltzes then polkas, some sad songs, some lonesome and he made that little harmonica just laugh when he was happy or frisky.

Papa worked for the outdoor roller skating rink in Bishop for a number of years. He took care of the skates, rented them out, open and closed the place and played his records for music to skate to. Waltzes were popular at roller rinks in the ‘50's’ and he had a lot. Papa did just about everything but the snack shack.

My brother and I went every night in the summer to the roller rink and became fairly good skaters. When I hear those waltzes now, I think of the roller rink and the great times we had. Dad loved the waltzes and played a lot of them on the harmonica. Some had words and some didn’t, or at least, I never knew all the words. ~Peggy
