HALLIDAY FAMILY

Joseph Halliday and Ellen Webb

Born and married in England,
then came to NY, Texas and CA

Joseph Halliday

Joseph Halliday was born 17 April, 1842, in Wolverhampton, Stroud Parish in Gloucester Shire, England.  The son of Joseph and Jane (Dickenson) Halliday.

Ellen Webb was born in King Stanley to William and Mary (Bidmead)Webb.

Joseph and Ellen were also married in King Stanley, 22 November 1871

Joesph and Ellen left "Jolly ol' England" sometime before October, 1972.

Two sons were born in Utica, New York.
  1. William D. - in 1874
  2. Harry Joseph - in 1876

Joseph received his naturalization papers October 17, 1876.   Shortly after that, the family went to England for an extended visit.

Two more sons were born in Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire, England.

  1. Frank Ernest - in 1878
  2. Alfred George Webb - in 1880

Sometime after Fred's birth in 1880, the family returned to America.   Harry Halliday talked about living in Waco, Texas. I know both Harry and his daughter, Phyllis, raised and enjoyed okra. (This in not a tradition from England!)   Harry also liked screened-in porches to sleep on, like back in Waco.

I have no records on the family being in Texas, but they could have been, were no births, marriages, deaths or land exchange that took place there.  The 1890 census burned and records do not exist. The family could have easily have been in Texas during this time.

September 15, 1895, Joseph Halliday purchased 160 acres out of Lone Pine in Inyo County, California. The family lived there on a ranch until Ellen became ill.   The boys were older and worked mostly on their own.  July of 1898, Joseph, Ellen and Fred began a trip to move to southern California.  Harry was sixteen and he was left on the ranch to care for it.
They stayed a while in the town of Lang, near Soledad.   Ellen fell down some stairs and had to remain there, while Joseph and Fred went on to Garvanza.   Flo came to help her while she was recovering. I believe this to be Florance Clayton, who later married Ellen’s oldest son William.

The family settled in Garvanza, a small town along the railroad tracks, three hours' buggy ride from Pasadena. Established May 1887 and discontinued in June 1901. This is now Highland Park, Los Angeles county.

Ellen died in Garvanza and is buried in a small cemetery, Downey Cemetery on Burbank Boulevard.  Her tombstone reads: Ellen Halliday 1844-1899.  I don’t know who paid for the stone, but Joseph’s name is also on it: Joseph Halliday 1842-1928. Joseph died August 11, 1928 in Corona, Riverside county.
